About This Project

Summary

AARP’s mission to empower people to choose how they live as they age pays attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the social, economic, and health disparities that present barriers for many in accessing those choices. Sisters From AARP supports this mission as we celebrate Black women. Here, we sought to provide relatable information about glaucoma to help readers understand they can be at higher risk for this progressive and degenerative disease—and know how to protect their sight.

Goals & Objectives

With this health-focused project, we sought to educate and empower our audience, as Black women can face health disparities and—as KFF reports—discrimination in health care settings. So, we sought to inform our readers about “this silent thief of sight” and teach them how to protect their vision.

Results & Impact

We shared this with 400,000-plus subscribers and followers. Notably, our metrics put it in the top 20% of articles for 2024. Beyond reach, we believe we shifted perceptions about screening (due in part to this personal narrative and cited facts) and revealed how readers can advocate for themselves.
