About This Project
Summary
When Trump slashed USAID funding, we didn't just report the cuts—we cracked the code. We mined international datasets to reveal what others missed: the cuts disproportionately harmed women and girls globally across sectors. We showed that even nations receiving little overall assistance relied heavily on US funding for women's healthcare. We coupled the global picture with local reporting in Kenya to humanize the story, showing the places where the cruelty of the cuts were most deeply felt.
Goals & Objectives
To answer: What’s the global reach of US aid cuts? How deep is dependence on US assistance? How and where are women and girls most affected? What are the human stories behind the spreadsheet? How are affected communities and policymakers responding? Who is able to plug the gap the US is leaving?
Results & Impact
The story was carried by two publishing partners: The Nation, the largest newspaper in East Africa, and Ms Magazine. It led on Nation’s site for the full day as one of the best digital performers. The reporting was used to hold decision-makers to account at the Financing for Development in Sevilla.
