Shadowbanned and silenced: How Instagram's AI moderation is depriving young people and marginalized communities of reliable health information
The Fuller Project PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
Sex educators face algorithmic censorship that disproportionately silences women, queer creators and people of color who help vast audiences talk about bodies, identities and sexual health. When The Vulva Gallery—an educational Instagram account so popular Netflix’s hit ‘Sex Education’ featured it—was suddenly suspended, we collaborated with its creator and Feminist.org to spotlight the growing problem, and connect the dots among censorship, tech company monopolies and anti-rights movements.
Goals & Objectives
Use cross-platform and global creator partnerships to show human costs of AI that can’t tell pornography from education and what options exist to fight back. Document how AI censorship intensifies health disinformation for LGBTQ+, BIPOC and young people, especially in places where sex-ed is taboo.
Results & Impact
Shattered engagement records: 13.4% rate vs 3.5% monthly average (283% increase). Reached 432K people—20x typical reach. Generated 15.2K interactions, our highest ever. More importantly, we amplified creator voices globally and created a new template for collaborative, community-based DEI reporting.
