Summary
As we created a special magazine issue about US government cuts to public health programs and research, we wanted to show on-the-ground impacts. We worked with our sister publication, Global Health NOW, to report on four USAID projects in different countries that were dramatically impacted. Freelance journalists documented the swift, damaging changes to programs that sought to help people affected by TB in India, malaria in Nigeria, HIV in S. Africa, and toxins from illegal gold mines in Peru.
Goals & Objectives
We wanted our readers to understand the lost opportunities and lost lives caused by the cuts: Multi-drug-resistant TB prevention halted, mosquito nets languished in warehouses, experimental HIV vaccines sat unused, and voices against mercury pollution were muted.
Results & Impact
We shared this article with 28K print readers, 68K email readers, nearly 1 million social media followers, and 90K+ newsletter readers. We delivered on our goals by creating a provocative, detailed feature article with global reporting that revealed the far-reaching effects of USAID cuts.
