Summary
On June 8, 2024, Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts was officially renamed as Marian Anderson Hall—the first major concert venue in the world to honor the legendary Black contralto, civil rights icon, and Philadelphian. The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts executed a multi-tiered campaign encompassing civic and community engagement, fundraising, strategic partnerships, public relations, and social media to share the historic moment locally and nationally.
Goals & Objectives
Raise awareness of Marian Anderson’s legacy and connection to Philadelphia; create an inclusive space where all feel welcome; engage with the local community to celebrate the rededication; strengthen the organization’s ability to do mission-driven work and preserve the hall for future generations.
Results & Impact
On June 8, 2024, 500+ members of the community gathered to witness the rededication ceremony, nearly 700 guests attended the Great Stages Gala, and 2000 attended the concert that evening. The rededication gained national media attention in 1259 stories and inspired over $27.5 million in fundraising.
