The Smart Diver is a short documentary directed by Vivian Ip that profiles professional high diver Ellie Smart. It traces her rise in the sport while exploring the emotional and physical challenges she’s faced along the way. The film marks the first time Ellie publicly speaks about surviving sexual assault. The creative strategy was to tell her story with honesty and care, empowering her voice and connecting with audiences through vulnerability, athleticism, and advocacy.
Goals & Objectives
To spotlight Ellie Smart’s journey as both an elite athlete and a survivor, emphasizing resilience, courage, and healing. The objective was to foster connection, amplify conversations around mental health and trauma, and position Ellie as a powerful advocate through sport.
Results & Impact
Premiering at Indy Shorts and the Florida Film Festival, the project received strong audience response. As a Red Bull athlete, Ellie was given a platform to share her story with care, reflecting the brand’s commitment to amplifying authentic, human-centered narratives in sport.
