About This Project
Summary
A Simple Herstory is an award-winning audio fiction series about 100+ women who have run for President of the U.S. Season 1 features Victoria Woodhull (1872); Season 2 highlights Margaret Chase Smith (1964). In 2024–25, we expanded into live events at Vassar's Powerhouse Theater—merging audio and theater, involving students (the next gen), and revealing some of the most riveting hidden histories in American politics to an anticipatory, new community, while building a local following.
Goals & Objectives
The series challenges ideas about women in politics, American culture, & the ways we relay history. Through live events, we’re creating localized campaigns, as it were, to connect people with a vibrant space to engage with the undeniable messiness—and extraordinary appeal—of the women who ran.
Results & Impact
We're in a period marked by incredible divisiveness. Our radio play-style events have sparked unexpected community around some of our country's most complex politicos. People return again & again to engage with the mix of medium, ideology, history—to meet & re-meet our nation's most difficult women.
