About This Project
Summary
Whether it’s the lost generation of students with devastating impacts on learning, school security, the ban on racial and cultural diversity of thought or educators who are burnt out and have retired early, ABC News' network-wide reporting series focused on underserved communities, examining what’s at stake for our children’s future and how we can champion education for the leaders of tomorrow.
Goals & Objectives
We wanted to uncover information about school lead levels falling outside the EPA testing. We partnered with affiliate stations to gather and analyze data from 130 districts across 11 states. We found patchwork of rules and regulations that often allow testing to be voluntary.
Results & Impact
ABC reporting caught the attention of a manufacturer of drinking fountains and bottle filling stations. The company contacted the New York State Department of Education and the East Ramapo School District to see if they can help get school fountains fixed.
