About This Project
Summary
The program started with a statistic: Hispanic people are 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than white people. Our set out to investigate both why that gap exists, and how families and individuals comprising that statistic are coping. It’s one of the most comprehensive accounts of the problem to be reported for television. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease is growing, and the group facing the largest increase is Hispanic Americans.
Goals & Objectives
Our team sought out leading experts in the field in order to understand the cultural barriers to diagnosis and treatment which include stigma against the disease and language barriers.
Results & Impact
Our special helps break the stigma around talking about Alzheimer’s disease, raises awareness about the risks and sensitively portrays the often-invisible caretakers behind the illness. These families hope their stories inspire others to talk about the the disease — and to get the help they need.
