REact: Renewable Energies for Assisting Communities Tool

About This Project

Summary

REact is a no-cost system for greening disaster response. It’s the first comprehensive tool that rapidly assesses the energy needs of any humanitarian operation and provides an actionable renewable energy plan. The web app handles calculations and equips users with easy-to-understand, turn-key guidance tailored by location and program type. REact cuts costs, emissions and health impacts of fossil fuels, often hard to get in disaster/war zones.

Goals & Objectives

Created to solve a paradox: cash-strapped nonprofits aim to promote health and sustainability, but many run on fossil fuels that are costly and worsen climate and health. REact can help cut costs, improve energy reliability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve health.

Results & Impact

Designed and refined with 40+ NGOs and UN agencies, REact is poised to impact Action Against Hunger’s 59-country footprint and the humanitarian system. Early indicators from Colombia and Mauritania are promising; ~150 NGO leaders from varied countries and organizations are currently using the tool.
