The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) Claims Win in Fight for Affordable Asthma Inhalers
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
After working with AAFA to understand the impact of asthma on marginalized communities, the Senate HELP Committee launched an investigation into the pricing practices of the top four manufacturers of asthma inhalers. AAFA then began a campaign to raise awareness around the need to address inhaler affordability to improve access. AAFA media releases and a social campaign resulted in extensive national media coverage. Price caps of $35 a month have been announced for many asthma inhalers.
Goals & Objectives
The goal of the campaign was to establish AAFA as the leading patient voice addressing the issues of affordability and accessibility of asthma medicines. Additionally, AAFA sought to put pressure on the U.S. drug pricing system to achieve lower costs for patients.
Results & Impact
Three drug manufacturers announced new asthma inhaler price caps due to public pressure. AAFA was the only asthma-focused patient organization invited to the White House as the President addressed health care costs and celebrated the price caps. AAFA received significant national media coverage.
