About This Project
Summary
The Hometown Food Security Project is a community-based effort, convened by Hormel Foods, to end hunger in Mower County, MN. The mobile app is a first-of-its kind tool to fill multiple food security gaps: 1) Helps people locate nearby food resources in real-time. 2) Rallies volunteers and supporters to help others in real-time 3) Enables a novel approach to collect critical food security data. The app, made possible by Hormel Foods, overcomes multiple barriers to fighting hunger, locally.
Goals & Objectives
Help people in need find food and resources near them. Engage the community through volunteer opportunities and food donations. Serve as a first-of-its-kind model for a new level of food insecurity data gathering. Create a model helpful to other communities.
Results & Impact
Hundreds of downloads in its first week, starting July 8 2024, and hundreds of surveys completed. Likely thousands by August 2024. Already, nearly a dozen other communities have asked if we could make them a similar app, and we are working on that.
