About This Project
Summary
Breakthrough Energy partnered with HappyFunCorp to design/develop/launch Contrails Observer, a mobile app that invites all to be involved in the climate change mitigation process by identifying, tracking and collecting contrail observations from the ground. Recent estimates show that contrail-cirrus warming from aircrafts contributes roughly 2% of anthropogenic climate warming. Observations collected are used to help build/validate models with AI that will positively impact global climate change
Goals & Objectives
(1) Develop an easy to use app that allows citizen scientists to contribute to contrail research and validate prediction models which will help airlines reduce the climate impact of contrails; (2) Spread awareness.
Results & Impact
The app has been downloaded by the public, researchers, industry scientists, and pilots. The observations of contrail forming regions and forecasts validate prediction models that if adopted by airlines in flight planning yield the opportunity to reduce human contribution to global warming by 1%.
