Flint’s Warning to America: Capital B’s Reporting on 10 Year Anniversary of Flint Water Crisis
Capital B News PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
A decade ago, the Flint water crisis made water infrastructure failures national news—but it was an issue that had already long implanted itself on daily life for Black communities, impacting health, education, and economic stability. Ahead of the ten-year anniversary of the crisis’s start, Capital B’s climate and environment reporter Adam Mahoney spent a week in Flint, interviewing dozens of residents who showed how a water crisis could effectively decimate a city.
Goals & Objectives
Adam traveled the U.S. to document water infrastructure failures in Black communities, highlighting how investment alone cannot resolve Black America’s water crisis—inequities in governance & policy block effective solutions. His reporting gives a voice to those who are still reeling 10 years later.
Results & Impact
Various advocacy nonprofits like Water Hub at Climate Nexus & Flint Rising have used Adam’s project in their organizing efforts, and it’s been added to University of Michigan–Flint’s curriculum and in reports from nonprofit policy groups. The story was covered by Grist, NPR, Bloomberg and more.
