About This Project
Summary
How does an island in the middle of the Pacific run out of drinking water? And what happens when it does? After speaking to Native Hawaiians, farmers and military families poisoned by a fuel leak, and going with water supply officials deep into the mountains where the aquifer comes to life, we found the answer: climate change. Our documentary explores the delicate complexity of Hawaii's water system – and how a warming planet. military mismanagement and overtourism combined to fuel a crisis.
Goals & Objectives
When the Red Hill jet fuel leak contaminated Oahu’s water system, it got national attention. But coverage focused on the leak itself; not on how it exacerbated an existing water crisis. We set out to show how climate change, tourism and the leak are intertwined, threatening Hawaii’s future.
Results & Impact
More than 325k people watched the documentary across CBS News’ social media channels, with half a million more reading the corresponding article. The doc has also been utilized by local leaders and attorneys representing Red Hill victims, putting pressure on the military for further response.
