CDT Report - Moderating Maghrebi Arabic Content on Social Media
Center for Democracy & Technology PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
The CDT Research team published a new report (w/Digital Citizenship, funded by Internet Society Foundation) – the first in an ongoing series investigating content moderation biases in the Global South. We investigated challenges of moderating Maghrebi Arabic dialects, incl. exploration of tactics users employ to combat moderation's shortcomings, challenges Maghrebi Arabic content moderators face, & downfalls of lack of representation of native speakers in developing automated moderation systems.
Goals & Objectives
CDT Research’s latest work builds on multiple years of shining a light on the problems that stem from the reality that Global North languages (esp. English) dominate in knowledge-sharing & tech. This leads to the marginalization of, & inadequate support for, Global South languages in digital spaces.
Results & Impact
This is the first comprehensive report to focus on content moderation systems for Maghrebi Arabic dialects. Being read by major academics + platforms' policy execs, urging them to invest in diversity of their natural language processing teams, as well as more Global South-specific training datasets.
