About This Project

Summary

Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia works to re-imagine, document, and amplify histories to highlight collective struggles by and with people whose stories have been silenced or excluded. Facilitating the creation of nine community-led projects, MAAV focuses on the diversity of Appalachian communities, migration and forced displacement; resource extraction; and collective struggles for social justice including anti-racist, environmental justice, and labor movements.

Goals & Objectives

MAAV’s goals are to create monuments to highlight collective struggles, to reimagine place, to acknowledge Appalachia's diversity, to conduct ethical storytelling and engagement with communities, and to provide public access to all materials.

Results & Impact

This $3 million project has generated collaborations among community members, local organizations, artists, scholars, and educators who share an interest in constructing public narratives around themes of resistance and civic engagement grounded in dynamic relationships between peoples and places.
