About This Project
Summary
A multi-faceted project combining riveting story-telling, rich documentation, unique travel experiences and community activism to create critical conversations about the role that local communities from Portugal’s former colonies play in shaping Lisbon’s thriving culinary culture. Working with cultural associations and community activists, we assure the inclusion and involvement of members of the community and work with them to disperse much needed income to economically neglected areas.
Goals & Objectives
In 2017, Culinary Backstreets launched “Lisbon’s Post-Colonial Kitchens” as a public awareness campaign designed to create a model of tourism that is sustainable, responsible, and regenerative, and which empowers local and historic communities facing economic and systematic challenges.
Results & Impact
Through publishing on our site, outreach and advocacy, special events and tour design and operation, the project has successfully changed the way that Lisbon’s culinary culture is perceived, amplifying the voices of unheard communities and individual culinary masters to both locals and travelers
