Cyberattack on Change Healthcare brings turmoil to healthcare operations nationwide

Summary

For our audience of healthcare finance professionals, a February 2024 cyberattack that crippled core systems of clearinghouse Change Healthcare qualified as a true emergency. Almost immediately, advocacy groups warned that an expected lengthy outage could force hospital facilities and physician practices to scale back on services or even close shop due to an inability to file claims and receive payment. Our coverage aimed to give readers the information they needed to manage the ongoing impact.

Goals & Objectives

Our coverage was intended to continuously provide information and insight about the ongoing consequences of the shutdown. We wanted to offer information that could be updated quickly in an easily digestible format. To that end, we settled on a running blog and news segment on HFMA’s podcast.

Results & Impact

Starting the weekend after the incident, we updated the blog multiple times daily through March. Thereafter, news was posted several times per week. Readers came to rely on the frequent updates: The blog had more than twice as many clicks as any piece of content our association has produced.
