About This Project

Summary

The #SecureOurSocials campaign is based on the research done by HRW and partners on how government officials and private individuals across the Middle East and North Africa are targeting LGBTQ+ people based on their social media activity. It calls on Meta platforms to do more to make their platforms safe for LGBTQ+ people. The bilingual campaign (English and Arabic) includes a petition directed to Meta executives, a WhatsApp action, an awareness tips guide, the spot “Air Anya” and graphics.

Goals & Objectives

The campaign goals are first to call on Meta to be more accountable and transparent by publishing meaningful data on its investment in user safety, including content moderation, and to adopt some additional safety features. Second, the campaign aims to create awareness for those at risk of harm.

Results & Impact

We reached 11M+ people on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. The spot “Air Anya” garnered 260K+ views on IG and 50+ stories (CNN, LGBTQ Nation, The Advocate and The New Arab). 245K+ HRW subscribers opened the email action, 165K+ visited the campaign site visits and 10K+ petitions were sent to Meta.
