About This Project
Summary
Following the Tobacco Pack Surveillance System (TPackSS) systematic protocol, researchers collected/analyzed cigarette packs sold in Mexico to assess compliance with health warning label requirements, as well as the presence of marketing appeals that could counteract health warning label regulations. The findings highlight opportunities for strengthened packaging policies and enforcement. Dissemination methods: bilingual fact sheet; published paper; poster and oral presentation; media outreach.
Goals & Objectives
When packaging includes clear, visual health warnings that elicit a strong emotional reaction, fewer people start using tobacco and nicotine products to begin with. This surveillance study aimed to evaluate regulatory compliance and to monitor an industry prone to exploiting regulatory loopholes.
Results & Impact
The noncompliance findings generated earned media coverage with a total potential reach of nearly 30M and prompted favorable action by a subcommittee within Mexico’s National Commission on Mental Health and Addiction at the Ministry of Health, informing its health warning label proposal updates.
