About This Project
Summary
The On Our Watch podcast uses gripping narrative, never-before-heard interrogation tapes and emotional interviews to shed light on the hidden world of correctional officer accountability. Over eight episodes, we trace the story of two correctional officers who worked in an elite investigative unit and died unexpectedly after reporting misconduct by their fellow officers at California State Prison Sacramento, colloquially known as New Folsom.
Goals & Objectives
Our goal is to promote transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system. We sought to uncover systemic abuse and corruption within the California Department of Corrections, and understand the lives and deaths of two whistleblowers.
Results & Impact
The series got over 1.3 million downloads. We won a lawsuit against the California department of corrections, forcing compliance with state transparency laws. Audiences including corrections staff and incarcerated advocates shared the podcast widely, sparking awareness and conversation.
