About This Project

Summary

“Anthem to US,” presented by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Brooklyn Public Library, invited entrants to create a contemporary anthem that echoed Americans’ hopes, struggles, and untold histories. A diverse group of 100 participants – reflective of the country’s multiculturalism – then embarked on an immersive writing workshop series. Three people advanced to the next round, in which they collaborated with composers to craft a final composition, culminating in a live performance.

Goals & Objectives

Paying homage to the anthem genre, the project set out to create modern songs to add to the canon that reflect experiences and dreams of today. Rooted in participation and everyone having a voice, the project provided a blueprint for celebrating the multitude of stories that live within our nation.

Results & Impact

Let Them Fly, with lyrics by Jessy Tomsko and composed by Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby, was named the winning anthem at the culminating concert. The scores for the final three anthems were shared on our website, allowing anyone to learn and enjoy these compositions in community with one another.
