About This Project
Summary
In the Mad Men era of magazine journalism, Virginia Kraft was deadly with a rifle and penned epic, deeply reported features. She hunted with kings, drank with Hemingway, and took down all of the Big Five trophy animals. So why hasn’t anyone heard of her? THE CATCH is more than just a profile of one of most important, unheralded writers in journalism history. It’s also a deeply reported, contemplative essay that grapples with Kraft’s legacy and what it means to be a woman in journalism today.
Goals & Objectives
This feature had several goals: 1. Righting the wrong of Kraft being overlooked by history, 2. Chronicling the complex challenges of women in journalism during the Equal Rights Movement, and 3. Assessing, honestly, Kraft's legacy as well as that of the Equal Rights Movement against today's progress.
Results & Impact
Winning the Webby's "Best Editorial Feature" and the "Best Profile" from Newhouse Mirror Awards—and placement in "The Year's Best Sports Writing"—THE CATCH has unequivocally corrected the record. Male journalists including Peter King and Curry Kirkpatrick promoted the story to millions of followers.
