About This Project
Summary
This short film follows mycologist Giuliana Furci’s search for new mushrooms in far southern Chile. She’s joined by biologist and author Merlin Sheldrake and mycologist Toby Kiers. Together, the three scientists illuminate how—through nutrient cycling and the essential relationships they form with plants—fungi underpin every ecosystem on Earth, and outline a strategy for greater fungal inclusion in conservation policy.
Goals & Objectives
1. To persuade conservation nonprofits and governments to add fungi to their definitions of wildlife and conservation plans, recognizing them as one of the key pillars of life on Earth. 2. Generate engagement about the global importance of fungi, and have people say funga alongside flora and fauna.
Results & Impact
Screenings for 2000+ attendees, including UN Convention on Biodiversity supporting a global fungal conservation initiative; 30-fold increase in signatures on commitment page, florafaunafunga.org; 200% more awareness of the term “funga” and support for fungal conservation amongst surveyed audiences.
