About This Project
Summary
As the first and only regional disability organization in the country, the mission of New Disabled South is to improve the lives of disabled people and cultivate strong disability rights and disability justice frameworks in the South. Through organizing, policy, research, and narrative change, our work is focused on advancing a singular vision: a South where all disabled people experience liberation, justice, and transformative change in our lifetimes.
Goals & Objectives
New Disabled South has three pillars: Poverty & Care, Criminalization, and Democracy. Our work is cross-issue and cross-movement because disabled people live at the intersections of every other identity, and our goal is to achieve tangible wins for disabled people within these issue-area pillars.
Results & Impact
Since we launched in 2022, New Disabled South has achieved numerous policy wins, including securing historic funding toward Georgia's waiting list for home care for disabled people, and pay raises for care workers from $10 to $16 per hour. We have reached thousands of disabled people in the South.
