Summary

In 2023, New Disabled South launched our Plain Language Policy Dashboard, an accessible, open-source tool that shares proposed legislation across our 14 Southern states in plain language, through a combination of AI and human analysis for accuracy. The Plain Language Policy Dashboard is the first of its kind, centering language accessibility through providing plain language translations of current bills impacting disabled people in the South across 14 Southern states.

Goals & Objectives

The AI-powered Plain Language Policy Dashboard is as a tool that prioritizes language accessibility, digital accessibility, connection to relevant resources, and accurate policy interpretation, with a goal of being able to understand and share accessible policy information that benefits everyone.

Results & Impact

We have on average 3,000 users per month and have seen the impact of plain language, accessible policy through legislative session across our 14 states. Disabled and nondisabled people alike have shared that they finally understand the bills and legislation that govern their lives.
