Landmarking the Rainbow Flag at Harvey Milk Plaza
NewFest New York's LGBTQ+ Film Organization PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
In 1978, Gilbert Baker created the Rainbow Flag in San Francisco. It has since become a globally recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ liberation and pride. The Rainbow Flag installation at Harvey Milk Plaza is Baker’s sole remaining permanent art installation. It honors the political achievements of Harvey Milk and the next generation of LGBTQ+ politicians. While communities across the country are banning the rainbow flag we’re working to landmark this singular physical manifestation of pride.
Goals & Objectives
Our goal is to ensure this historic icon flies 365 days a year in support of sexual & gender minorities. We hired a historian to do research and made presentations to the Castro Cultural District & Merchants Assoc. We ask the community to sign a petition requesting official landmark status.
Results & Impact
Over 9K signed our petition and we collected 60+ letters of support from neighborhood groups and intl. friends. The SF Preservation Comm & BOS unanimously voted for the ordinance. Mayor London Breed officially made the rainbow flag at Harvey Milk Plaza a city landmark at a signing on 9/13/2024.
