About This Project
Summary
Honored with rare screenings at the White House, the United Nations, the U.S. Capitol, and the European Parliament, UNCONDITIONAL is the genre-defining story of three families and their resilient journey of caregiving and mental strength. This award-winning film from NBC News/MSNBC Anchor Richard Lui explores topics that are both hidden wounds and hidden strengths in all of us. UNCONDITIONAL dissolves stereotypes on caregiving and mental health, both often seen in black and white.
Goals & Objectives
UNCONDITIONAL works to undermine stereotypes on mental health, often seen in black and white – such as ‘mental health equals mental illness.’ The reality is in the gray. Further, on the stereotype that these subjects are depressing and ho hum, the film flips that by showing joy despite difficulty.
Results & Impact
Bipartisan support of the film by close to two dozen Members of Congress led to the passage of the Kate Hendricks Thomas SERVICE Act (named in honor of one of the film’s subjects), addressing servicewomen health needs. Screenings and caregiver trainings were held across 14 states with NGO partners.
