About This Project
Summary
Blak Powerhouse was an activation of the We Are Warriors brand. The event was a WAW takeover of the Powerhouse Museum – a fully immersive event of art, photography, a documentary premiere, music, dance and panel discussions, that aimed to reframe the narrative of Australia Day and encourage the next generation of Indigenous kids to ‘see it to be it’.
Goals & Objectives
Previous efforts to help First Nations youth had focused on changing negative perceptions of them by non-indigenous Australians. You can’t be what you can’t see. And all they saw in the media were harmful stereotypes. So with Blak Powerhouse we celebrate Blak excellence in culture.
Results & Impact
Over the course of two years and two events, Blak Powerhouse attracted over 10,000 attendees, establishing itself as the museum’s largest audience at its Powerhouse Late events to date. The event generated media coverage worth AU$3 million, and WAW's website sessions surged by 1000%.
