About This Project

Summary

The Philly ABCs build alphabet knowledge with a healthy dose of Philly pride! This creative placemaking project transforms chain-link fences—often a barrier and eyesore—into playful learning hubs. Vibrant banners don’t just teach letters; they celebrate the city’s beloved people, places, and things. Families are invited to play and learn together through fun prompts that get them practicing early literacy skills. These small interactions spark curiosity and support reading for a lifetime.

Goals & Objectives

Raise awareness of the importance of alphabet knowledge; Nudge families to practice early literacy skills with young children; Spotlight culture as an educational tool; Design a beloved, easily-adopted resource that further activates early literacy citywide.

Results & Impact

The Philly ABCs have been installed at over 20 public playgrounds, boosting parent-child literacy interactions for thousands of families. They’ve also been featured at local schools and the Philadelphia Zoo. We’ve seen a lot of learning and even more joy. A formal evaluation report is set for 2025.
