About This Project
Summary
In 1940, John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts, marine biologist, commissioned an old tuna ship to do groundbreaking ocean science research in the Sea of Cortez. That ship was lost for 75 years. But the combination of Art + Science (through Steinbeck’s book “Log from the Sea of Cortez”) inspired a generation of marine biologists. Fast forward to today, the ship was found and restored to be an ocean research vessel. We told the story with the help of Emmy-Award-Winning actor Nick Offerman.
Goals & Objectives
The idea was to #SparkCuriosity and build a new movement for ocean health and research featuring John Steinbeck and Dr Ed Rickett's old ship now restored to it's 1940's grandeur with a new state-of-the-art science lab below deck. Thanks to Nick Offerman + The Western Flyer Foundation.
Results & Impact
Celebrities, influencers, and scientists assembled, tens of thousands of people reached, operational funds raised, and the birth of a new educational sea vessel. A new film made and the return to the Sea of Cortez film in funding mode.
