About This Project
Summary
Your Voice is Power is a national competition for middle and high school students designed to teach the fundamentals of computer science, entrepreneurship, and social justice. Using the EarSketch coding platform, students get creative to remix songs from six Indigenous artists as they reflect on Indigenous histories and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. Two students each year win scholarships to support their studies or use as a grant to launch a project.
Goals & Objectives
We aimed to develop an engaging way to reach more students in two areas: coding and Indigenous histories, as many Canadian provinces and territories are beginning to require education about Indigenous peoples, but many teachers are struggling to find relevant, engaging resources to inspire students.
Results & Impact
To date, we've reached over 25,000 students across 467 schools as participants in the last 2 years, training over 1,400 teachers. Out of the 794 students who completed surveys: 52.3% reported they are more confident they can be successful in a career in computer science and/or music technology!
