About This Project
Summary
The New York Academy of Science’s Scientist-in-Residence (SiR) program, created in cooperation with the NYC Department of Education in 2012, matches scientists with NYC public school teachers to bring scientific inquiry to life in the classroom. By combining content and pedagogical expertise, each pair develops and implements a?yearlong project that engages students in authentic research that sparks long-term interest in STEM learning.
Goals & Objectives
The goal of SiR is to tackle STEM education gaps in schools, contextualize science in the real world and outside of the classroom, and inspire students towards a career in STEM. SiR provides an extracurricular avenue to build student their curiosity and connect them with scientists and STEM students
Results & Impact
Since its inception, over 350 teacher-scientist pairs have impacted 17,000+ students, notably from underserved backgrounds. In 2023, SIR hosted an in-person STEM Student Science Showcase, and this year, the Showcase returns as a two-day event, with 44 participating schools from 25 NYC districts.
